Target Tokyo at Live@Central
October 14, 2015 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Wednesday, October 14, you may hear the thunder of heavy radial engines from a flight of 16 Mitchell B-25 bombers led by Lt Col. Dr. Jimmy Doolittle, as they roar over LIVE@CENTRAL! in Florence. Doolittle’s Raiders have just taken off from the deck of the aircraft carrier USS Hornet, deep in the vast Pacific Ocean, and their mission is to bomb TARGET TOKYO! You may think you know this famous story, but if you have not heard James Scott, or read his book, you don’t know the real story. Mount Pleasant historian and author James Scott will tell you the true story of the legendary Doolittle Raid on April 18, of 1942.
Scott has dedicated many research hours and traveled four continents to find the real story and recording it for history. He is an amazing story teller and he will keep your attention riveted on the PowerPoint screen as he tells this true story. You will learn why President Roosevelt ordered this “suicide mission”. You will hear the good, the bad, and the ugly. You will get the facts on Darlington native, Lt. Billy Farrow, the pilot of the last plane to take off of the Hornet. You will learn why Dr. Jimmy Doolittle was likely the only man who could pull this daring raid off. You will be sitting on the edge of your seat as you relive this gripping saga of American ingenuity, courage, bravery, arrogance, audacity, and heroism. The 80 volunteers dropped 64,000 pounds of high explosives and incendiaries with modest actual damage, but the mission was a resounding success because the Doolittle Raiders were successful in exposing the vulnerable underbelly of the Japanese mainland. You will learn why this important and risky mission turned the tide of the war in the Pacific.
LIVE@CENTRAL! will host James Scott as he shares the story of this this nerve racking WW2 epic. After the program, Scott will sign books. The program will be presented at 6:30 PM, Wednesday, October 14th, at Central United Methodist Church on the Corner of South Irby Street and West Cheves Street in downtown Florence. The optional meal for this evening will be a BBQ fundraiser for the United Methodist Women of the church catered by School House BBQ for $8.00 per plate served beginning at 5:00 PM.
