A Christmas Carol

When Charles Dickens wrote his “ghostly little tale” in 1843, he couldn’t know that A Christmas Carol was destined to become one of the most beloved holiday traditions of all time. By telling this fable illustrating the unfairness of the Industrial Revolution and the necessity for brotherhood and unselfishness, Dickens gave the world one of its most enduring Christmas stories.  The Nebraska Theatre Caravan, the professional touring wing of the Omaha Community Playhouse, has been touring Charles Jones’ delightful adaptation ofA Christmas Carol since 1979. The Caravan’s Carol, which weaves traditional Christmas carols throughout the narrative, is probably the most widely produced production of Dickens’ in the nation, annually performing for more than 100,000 people in more than 60 cities across the country.

Always…Patsy Cline

Always… Patsy Cline, based on the true story of Patsy Cline’s friendship with Houston housewife Louise Seger comes complete with true emotion, down home country humor and, with 27 songs in the show, includes many of Patsy’s unforgettable hits such as Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams Walking After Midnight. In 1961 Cline went to Houston for a show. Seger and her buddies, who had arrived 90 minutes early, met Cline who was traveling alone. The two women struck up a friendship that lasted until Cline’s untimely death in a plane crash in 1963. Always…Patsy Cline has enjoyed great success both off-Broadway and on tour.  This particular production will feature Carter Calvert (who has been seen on the PAC stage multiple times in Neil Berg’s 100/101/102 Years of Broadway) as Patsy Cline and Charlene Tilton (who starred in the role of Lucy Ewing on the 1978 TV series “Dallas”) as Louise Seger.

Sawyer Brown in Concert

One of those rare acts who actually became stars directly from winning Star Search, country-rockers Sawyer Brown wound up enjoying a long, hit-filled career and have remained commercially viable into the new millennium. The group originally grew out of country-pop singer Don King’s touring band, with drummer Joe Smyth, bassist Jim Scholten, keyboardist Gregg “Hobie” Hubbard, and guitarist/future lead singer Mark Miller.  King stopped touring in 1981, and the group decided to stay together, naming themselves after the Nashville street where they rehearsed. They spent the next two years on the road, and their agent landed them an audition for the popular syndicated talent show Star Search. Sawyer Brown won the grand prize of 100,000 dollars in 1983, and it wasn’t long before Liberty/Capitol signed them up in 1984. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1985, and their debut single, “Leona,” climbed into the Top 20; its follow-up, “Step That Step,” went all the way to number one, and the album fell one spot short of that same position. Their sophomore album, Shakin’, was another hit, producing the Top Five single “Betty’s Bein’ Bad.”  They have had a succession of hits throughout the 1990’s.  The latest addition to Sawyer Brown is lead guitarist Shayne Hill, who joined the band in 2004.

Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers in Concert

BH2_300x300Almost three decades after winning a Grammy for Best New Artist and launching one of contemporary music’s most diverse careers, Bruce Hornsby still makes joyful noise as he discovers clever and expansive ways to chronicle dynamic musical snapshots of his often generously collaborative journey.

In recent years, he has pushed his artistic limits, working with bluegrass legend Ricky Skaggs, The Bruce Hornsby Trio, and jazz legend Charlie Haden. Hornsby has also scored a number of projects for filmmaker Spike Lee including the documentary Kobe Doin’ Work (2009), Red Hook Summer (2012), and the upcoming Da Sweet Blood of Jesus. Hornsby has contributed to all-star collections that pay tributes to Fats Domino, The Band and in 2014, Jackson Browne.  A music graduate of University of Miami, Hornsby also has partnered with its Frost School of Music to establish the Creative American Music Program, a curriculum designed to develop the creative skills of talented young artist/songwriters by immersing them in the many traditions that form the foundations of modern American songwriting.

Christopher Cross in Concert

Christopher Cross is a music icon. In 2011, the Oscar and five-time Grammy winning artist was back with an amazingly crafted new album, Doctor Faith. It’s his first album of new and original material in over 12 years. Cross’ 1980 self-titled debut album rocketed to the #2 spot. Breaking out as the biggest new star of that year, he virtually defined adult contemporary radio with a series of smoothly sophisticated ballads including the #1 hit, “Sailing.”

If the charts weren’t evidence enough, at the 1981 Grammy Awards Christopher walked off with an unprecedented and record-setting five Grammys, including Best New Artist and Song of the Year for “Sailing.” The self-titled debut album, featuring lead single “Ride Like the Wind,” and the massively successful second single “Sailing” made Cross a superstar. In the wake of two more Top 20 hits, “Never Be the Same” and “Say You’ll Be Mine,” he soon scored a second #1, as well as an Academy Award, with “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do),” which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, and Peter Allen for the smash Dudley Moore film Arthur.

KANSAS in Concert

Kansas_300x300KANSAS has spent than four decades as a part of the soundtrack of the lives of multiple generations of music lovers. The band’s first public statement appeared on their self-titled album in 1974. “From the beginning, we considered ourselves and our music different and we hope we will always remain so.” Little did this legendary rock group realize that back in the early ‘70’s, what seemed to be “different,” was actually ahead of its time.

The band has produced eight gold albums, three sextuple-Platinum albums (Leftoverture, Point of Know Return, Best of KANSAS), one platinum live album (Two for the Show), and a million-selling gold single, ‘Dust in the Wind.’ KANSAS appeared on the Billboard charts for over 200 weeks throughout the ‘70’s and ‘80’s and played to sold-out arenas and stadiums throughout North America, Europe and Japan. ‘Carry On Wayward Son’ was the #2 most played track on classic rock radio in 1995 and went to #1 in 1997.
