Starr Ward Chamber Music Concerts Announces 

the last of Two Special Concerts presented this Spring as part of the Florence Downtown Development Corporation Starr Ward Chamber Music Concerts.

Sunday, May 6 Sara Ann Mitchell Jebaily, soprano

An emerging coloratura soprano, Sara is known for her shimmering voice and engaging stage presence. Most recently, Sara performed the role of the first maid in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro with Austin Lyric Opera. As a regular at Des Moines Metro Opera, Ms. Mitchell performed the role of the First Niece in Britten’s Peter Grimes, and covered the roles of Lisette in Pucinni’s La rondine and Sister Constance in Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites.

Sara also toured with Opera Iowa, the educational outreach division of Des Moines Metro Opera.

 

The concerts will be performed in the banquet hall of Victor’s Bistro in the Hotel Florence at 5PM. Admission is $10 at the door. A meet the Artist reception will follow.

Two Special Concerts are planned this Spring as part of the Florence Downtown Development Corporation Starr Ward Chamber Music Concerts.

 

Sunday, April 8 Yoonah Kim, clarinet

Winner, 2016 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition

In 2016, Korean-Canadian clarinetist Yoonah Kim became the first woman to win first prize at the Vandoren Emerging Artist Competition, and the first solo clarinetist to win CAG in nearly 30 nearly years. She has performed with The Juilliard and Mannes Orchestras, and in recitals at Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space and Alice Tully Hall. A member of Ensemble Connect, she serves as an ambassador for Carnegie Hall in New York City public schools.

Sunday May 2 bassist Sam Suggs will be featured. An omnivorous musician, Sam Suggs was recently named New Artist of the Month by Musical America and earned First Prize at the 2015 International Society of Bassists Solo Competition, performing many of his own compositions. As a collaborative bassist, he has performed at Mostly Music, Chamber Music Northwest, Yellow Barn, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center, and was named a Laureate Winner in the Open Division of the 2016 M-Prize Competition.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door. As is our custom the concert will be followed by a meet the Artist reception.

Starr Ward Chamber Music Series

On Sunday April 2 the Lysander Piano Trio will perform. The Lysander Piano Trio, a winner of the Concert Artists Guild Competition, has been praised by the Strad for its “incredible ensemble, passionate playing, articulate and imaginative ideas and wide palette of colours.” These qualities have made the Trio a standout at other competitions, with top honors at the 2010 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the 2011 Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition (Grand Prize), and the 2011 J. C. Arriaga Chamber Music Competition (First Prize). The Trio’s 2014 debut recording, After a Dream (CAG Records), featuring music by Ravel, Haydn, Schubert, Joaquin Turina, and Moshe Zorman.

Starr Ward Chamber Music series

The series started in 2009 as program of the Art trail Gallery when it occupied the Waters Building under the name of Chamber Music at the Gallery. The name changed last season when Starr Ward a founding board member died. The series will move again when the new Art trail Gallery on N. Dargan is completed.

Featuring recent competition winners from around the world the series will present its first concert of the New Year on Sunday Feb.26 at 5pm with the Brasil Guitar Duo. Brasil Guitar Duo, a 2006 winner of the Concert Artists Guild International Competition, and hailed by Classical Guitar magazine for its “maturity of musicianship and technical virtuosity,” is equally at home on a classical or a world-music series. Its innovative programming features a seamless blend of traditional and Brazilian works.

‘Country Sax, City Sax’ promises to be as gorgeous, hip, and entertaining as any saxophone concert you have ever seen. But you’ve never seen anything like this con-cert with saxophones before!

SC Chamber Music Festival with Paolo Gualdi, piano & John Laughton, clarinet

Paolo has won the top prize in several piano competitions, in-cluding the “De Martino Award” at the Ibla Inter-national Piano Competition and the First Prize in the 15th Bartók-Kabalevsky Inter-national Competition in Virginia.
