The Art of Telling a Story and Finding Inspiration

Libby Wiersema will share from her personal expierences how she is able to find and foster her inspiration within her poetry.
Libby Swope Wiersema is an editor and writer living in Florence, South Carolina. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing with a concentration in poetry from Queens University in Charlotte. Exploring the complexities of loss is a main theme of her work. Her first chapbook, “The Season of Terminal Cold” (Finishing Line Press), recounts the experience of her mother’s terminal illness and death. The granddaughter of Sicilian immigrants who settled near Birmingham, Alabama, cultural experiences influence her work, as well.
Her poetry is forthcoming or has appeared in Calyx, The Other Journal, Main Street Rag, KAKALAK 2014, KAKALAK 2015, Wherewithal, Birmingham Arts Journal, River Poets Journal, Hip Mama, Jasper and others. She is the former features editor for the Morning News and currently writes about the state’s culinary scene for the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism site, Discover South Carolina. She also serves as marketing coordinator for the Eastern Carolina Community Foundation fundraiser, Big Give Pee Dee, which supports local nonprofits.
